Dr. Seuss Explains Computers

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted ’cause the index doesn’t hash, then your situation’s hopeless and your system’s gonna crash.

If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel on another protocol, that’s repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse, then you may as well reboot it and go out with a bang, ’cause as sure as I’m a poet, your system’s gonna hang.

When the copy of your floppy’s getting sloppy on the disk, and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk, when you have to flash your memory and try to RAM your ROM, quickly turn off the computer and be sure to call your Mom!!

Totalling up costs

There are some things that I have that cost a certain amount per month. These things are normally good value but you just don’t want to total them up.

I’ve just realised that Napster, however good it is, has cost me £320. I could buy two ipods for that!

On another note I can’t wait for my iPod to break. iTunes is so bad now that I just can’t bear updating any of my music with the PC.

Avenue post unprotected

If you don’t have the password to read the story below then I’m sorry. The abridged version is that my job has changed slightly. It has changed for the better with a couple of technicalities.

The major change is that I’m back at Avenue campus with the Humanities staff.

Holiday… but not mine

A new rule that states that IT staff can’t have time off in October seems to have created a bigger problem… everyone has taken this week off.

Today I was called away for something critical… updating a web page. This thing isn’t remotely my job and having the permission to be able to do it was just a technicality. However all 3 web editors spanning two separate Humanities departments were all on holiday.

So I, not even having the software to do the job, had to go to a different building to sit in someone else’s seat to do half an hour of work that I shouldn’t have done. This is on a day that I went to the Humanities campus early because I had far more work than time in the day to do.

At least everyone seems happy to see me back, even if I don’t know what I’m doing once I am back.

Sarah Palin

Plenty of stuff going on at the moment that I haven’t had time to blog about but I thought I’d start with this.

I’ve been reading with interest about the American presidential elections and about the new female VP Sarah Palin.

It’s amazing to see that America has picked a woman who strongly opposes pro-choice, doesn’t believe that global warming was created by man and has pretty much no experience in running a state (never mind a country).

But this story – http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/30/121350/137 – is even more interesting.

At best, taking her word for it, she had her water break while pregnant and choose to fly for 8 hours across America, land and then travel for 45 minutes to a remote hospital. At worst, presuming she is lying, she has pretended to be pregnant for 8 months, has taken her 16 year old’s baby, and is pretending it is her own.

Check out the pictures, it has pictures of her in very tight clothes at 7 months pregnant and has pictures of her daughter (who apparently has a baby bulge and isn’t). She also had to tell her work collegues at 7 months because they couldn’t tell.

I call BS.

Update: If you read anything about this then read http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/08/29/what-is-mccain-thinking-one-alaskans-perspective/. It’s an excellent write up.

Not a great morning

Plenty of things have gone wrong this morning.

I put vista 64 bit edition on my computer on monday. It is very fast and a fantastic operating system. Trouble is that i now find that i cannot get drivers for the brand new printer we have.

Also i’ve been writing an application form that must be in tomorrow so I want it uploaded tonight so there is time for that to in wrong.

The only positive thing is that bloging from my phone seems to work.

Saying no to 0870

Since I’ve changed to a mobile phone contact and have Skype on my computer I’ve been paying a bit more attention to 0870 numbers and how horrid they are.

These numbers are about three times the price of a normal call, doesn’t get included in BT or mobile free minutes and the companies make a profit by keeping you on hold through them.

Money saving expert has an update saying that 0870 numbers will soon be classed as premium rate, something that I am very much looking forward to, even if it is for the fact that you aren’t allowed to pay to be in a queue on a premium rate number. You never know, NTL might answer the phone quicker.

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/0870-say-no

But in the mean time there is http://www.saynoto0870.com. This site will let you find national rate and freephone numbers for 0870 numbers. Seeing as nearly everyone with a BT line gets these calls free the site is fantastic. 0800 numbers are also not normally free on a mobile so you can normally find a normal number for the freephone ones.

But the easiest thing I’ve found is to just find the overseas number. For example on the student loan website you can call a host of 0870 numbers, but just call +44 141 243 3660 for overseas users. Just remember to use 141 before it (according to the money saving expert site)
