I’ve got a new hard drive to back things up on. Seeing as this theme doesn’t allow comments on the pages, only on the posts, I’ll leave this space for people to make comment.

Hi,
I’m thinking of buying this lacie ethernet disk mini home edition, and wondered if you could help on a couple of points:
I will need to keep it in my lounge in order to plug it in to the router. Hence I would need it to be quiet. Could you let me know how noisy it is?
Also, does the disk have a sleep mode or power management functions? I currently have a Maxtor shared storage II which automatically goes into sleep mode when not used for a certain period of time - hence is silent
Thanks a lot

Hi there,
The unit has a small (about 3cm) fan which is constantly on. However I can only hear it if every single item of electronics if off and I’m within about half a meter. It might be too loud if someone was sleeping next to it. However you can always turn it off at night using the power button on the front.
It doesn’t have a sleep mode, presumably because it is running an operating system, apache and php to allow the web access to the drive. You can turn off the unit to kill the power completely and the power off can be done via the internet (but you obviously can’t turn it back on).

Hi Graham,
I have the same device, indeed it is quite loud! But what annoys me EXTREMELY about this device is that authentication (even from within my LAN) is mediated through the Lacie website http://www.homelacie.com, just now when I’m writing this that site is/was down so I can’t even access my OWN disk! I have a PS3 and streaming from the HipServ to it is not flawless. I hope a software update will cure this. Does anyone know how to bypass
the authentication to the web interface of the device at the Lacie site. I also consider it a risk that my passwords
are stored there (Lacie may be a reputable company but why would we have to trust them, ‘trust us’ is a bad idea security wise), greetings, Harm ten Napel
December 27th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Hi Graham
It’s always nice if you find the answers to your own questions, to access the HipServ directly (either from the LAN or remote) use the following, add /?local=1 to the url, this will bypass the http://www.homelacie.com site, you will be presented with ‘Your Username:’ and ‘Your Password’, then use the username of the device (not the ‘Your Portal Name:’ which is required when you login via the http://www.homelacie.com site). The url is simply your outside IP address if you are anywhere in the world or your inside LAN IP address if you are local. Remember to logout (far right top corner) if you are using a public computer, otherwise the next guy may access your disk,
greetings, Harm
December 27th, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Hi Graham,
this is getting better and better, sorry for using (I hope not abusing) your site to publish my findings, here’s the story. I have an Apache server running at my private IP address, I forward port 80 to a local PC. Now since a few days (as it now appears exactly after I installed the Lacie disk / Hipserv) I am seeing requests to this httpd server from the following IP address: 206.191.24.194 about EVERY 5 Minutes! As I was quite annoyed by this, I have installed PeerGuardian to block these requests on that PC. Now I didn’t know who/what was 206.191.24.194, nslookup says its sys194.sirc.ca (hmm Canada…). Now when you go to http://lacie.hipserv.com/support/documentation/router/testportforward.html
there’s button ‘Test Port Forwarding’ and guess what happened when I pressed it: It says : Port 80 (Web access): A device other than your HipServ is listening on this port (yeah, that’s my webserver!). And this is what appears in my access.log file: 206.191.24.196 - - [27/Dec/2007:20:05:08 +0100] “GET / HTTP/1.0″ 200 5145, that’s in the exact same IP range as the requests I found earlier. This means / can be safely concluded, when you install this Lacie disk, they are doing pings to your IP address about every 5 minutes (confirmed to port 80, and probably to the other ports like 443 too). Isn’t that odd? I don’t think I like this ‘feature’ since it’s not their business to monitor if my device is up or not or anything,
greetings

Just to add some comments to this
“use the following, add /?local=1 to the url”
This is how it works if you install the software onto your computer. I admit that I removed the software to speed up my pc, but anyone using the software exactly as instructed WILL find this out.
“Isn’t that odd? I don’t think I like this ‘feature’ since it’s not their business to monitor if my device is up or not or anything,”
I would expect this to happen as there is it is checking for dynamic ip address changes. name.homelacie.com ALWAYS points to the correct IP whenever it changes, so I would guess it is normal for the lacie servers to check that it is up to date. Although what canada has to do with it I don’t know.

Hi guys can someone here help me? I got the Lacie Ethernet Disk mini Home Edition but mamaged to crack my installation cd and i haven’t even set up the drive yet. Can someone send me a compressed disc image or a link to all the software that are on the cd i can’t find them even at lacie site. HipServ i can’t find version 1.6 thats on my installation cd so help anyone please.

I am trying to install a LaCie 500gb external desk disc drive.
My main computer (Windows XP SP2) is my Employers computer and can be taken back at any time. It is formatted in FAT 32. I also have a PC running windows ME that I would also want to use the disc with which is also formatted in FAT 32. We also use a computer that is running XP, which is formatted NTFS. I would preferably like to format the LACIE disc in NTFS to get maximum performance out of the drive. Is this possible and still use all three computers off the Lacie drive?
Thank You. Alan
February 9th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
@Alan
I don’t think that is possible with the drive that I am talking about on this page.
This drive is a network storage device and is actually a very small linux computer running software (samba) that allows the drive to be shared. This is the reason that different people can have different accounts on the computer without being able to try into other peoples folders (although there is a shared folder).
Because linux (currently) generally uses FAT32 due to NTFS’s main selling point being higher security with Windows. It doesn’t use Windows so doesn’t need it.
However because it is a network device it can be used with all the computers you mention above, as long as they are all plugged into the same network and there isn’t a firewall between them.

Thanks Graham,
that’s very helpfull.

Hi,
I have a big problem with LACIE edmini 320GB. Yesterday morning it just stopped working. It means - I CAN’T get any access to device. When I plug the power cable on into power socket. The Big Blue LED is solid. But I can’t power off this device (even when I am holding power button longer than 5 sek). I can’t get access eighter network (no ping, no web access) or via USB cable. Nothing is happening on PC when I connect LACIE via USB (not details apear with detecting new hardware).
The device seems be death (not booting correctly).
Did you have similar problems.
Marcin Praczko
February 12th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
The device is not supposed to work over USB. The USB is for a printer or other secondary backup device (like a USB stick and not a PC).
However if you cannot access it, you are sure that the network is OK and you have tried a hard reboot by pulling the plug then I would recommend putting a ticket into the Lacie help pages https://www.lacie.com/uk/mystuff/login.htm?rtn=ticket where you will get some better help than through me.
I wouldn’t say I have had similar problems, but I have had it crash. The holding of the power button is a soft power off, so if the unit has crashed then the only option is to pull the plug.

Hi Graham,
Thank you very much for your answer.
At this moment I didn’t have time to wait to LACIE support (they reply me after 2 working days). But it was urgent. So I just took hard drive off. Was working OK - Knoppix didn’t have any problem to see all partition. Data on harddrive wasn’t destroy or crashed.
I made copy of all harddrive. But when I attached LACIE back (put hard drive, etc). Is not working any more. It seems be problem with pawer suplay. Now I can’t switch device on :).
But the most important thing has been done - data are not destroyed.
Thankyou any way for help.

Can’t setup my lacie home edition, the setup claims hipserv cannot connect to laciehome. Anyone?
February 21st, 2008 at 10:20 am
The initial setup of LacieHome requires the Internet.
Does your setup allow all of your network devices to connect to the internet (i.e. a router without ethernet security and not a USB modem?)
March 8th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
i bought this lacie home edition but i’ve had nothing but problems
lacie support is awful - i’ve had three tickets in and not one of them has been answered
i’ve had 2 promises from lacie staff (1 in writing) that my issues would get fixed by the end of the day - nothing happens
in theory the product is great but ftp is bad as in i cant always access despite having static ip - i’m sure there is something that can be done to fix but support never get back to you
you cant upload a file over about 300mb unless it is via ftp and i’ve given up trying to connect because sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t
the web interface is great in theory but try changing a file name or something - it hardly ever works
and try setting up a user account to access via ftp - it’s impossible
try looking for logs - there isn’t any
try contacting support - there isnt’ any
buy this product if you know exactly what you’re doing and you don’t need support. go buy another device - but this product at your own risk - i’ll be writing about it soon on my blog
March 14th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
1.6.1 is now available. With this version I have uploaded a 651MB file through the drag and drop interface.

Why ping from Canada ?
The LaCie Home Mini software is from Axentra which is Canadian !
http://www.axentra.com/
Instead off HomeLaCie.com, you can use:
https://www.myhipserv.com/
You can read a Home Mini forum:

I can’t figure out if it’s possible to run php and mysql on the webserver of the La Cie Ethernet Mini Home disk. Can you help me out with this one?
When it is possible, what steps have to be taken to configure it?
March 18th, 2008 at 11:36 am
I’ve not read anywhere that the box can be hacked to become a ‘real’
linux box to allow this.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:43 am
Thank you for your response. So it won’t be possible to install WAMP (or is it XAMP) on the La Cie Mini Home Disk? Also when I only want to use it locally?
March 22nd, 2008 at 9:40 am
Static IP gets killed.
I have just bought a Lacie ethernet disk mini home edition 500gb. I use it to share my music in my network. I want to give my disk a static ip. I even did. But now it has automatically changed back to dhcp while the administration page still says it is static. At the bottom of the configuration page it displays the actual ip address but in the configuration it displays the static address i assigned to it……
:-S Is that what they call static dynamic

Hi everybody
Today is 2008-04-05 (5th of april)
I need some help !
I have had similar problems on my Lacie Ethernet Mini Home Edition = LEMHE
like the other people here, and some more strange stuff
Problems:
1. Blinking all the time - but that is solved by reading your posts reinstalled an formated via the cd, now the furious blinking has stopped
thanks !
2. Can´t see the mac adress on the Lacie home edition when using a network tool for sniffing on my local network for security checking my lan.
Using (NetworkView) is a shareware 30 days only but very cool.
Need help with that !
Is it normal that i can´t see the mac adress on a NAS like this that uses linux ????
Or is it a BUG from formating the HDD and reeinstalling on the LEMHE ???
PLEASE ??? Anybody ???
(I do not know anything about linux)
I can see all my other computers on the lan and all the ports that is open and mac adress and ip etc. (running windows XP PRO)
3. When trying to copy a big file over 1 GIGABYTE to the Lacie mini home edition via mapping up Z:\\ to my Family folders, I loose the connection to it completely ?
I can see on my network card monitoring program, that it just goes down and looses the connection after a little while, the whole WIN-XP-Pro freezes ???
The file is in the format of .VOB = DVD file and over 1Gibabyte big.
I want this NAS to be a backup and mediaserver on my LAN, so I need this function for copying all type of big files to it !
around 700 Mb mpeg file works fine.
But not the .VOB file ??
Does anybody have a clue why it looses the connection ?
and any solution for how to make it work ?
Please……I am pulling my hair out soon
4. Can´t connect the LEMHE to my dreambox 500 for reccording or Viewing files ?
I can connect my DREAMBOX to the PC when i share a folder on my computer, but not on the LEMHE
Can anybody help me ?
5. The NAS LEMHE is sooooo darn slow
it says that it has a GIGABIT NIC but it is lower than slow
I have a LAN with A Router and a GIGABIT Switch (Netgear GS108) very nice :), that handles gigabit speed and jumbo frames, and netgear GA311 NIC cards on all my computers.
I have made several tests on the lan and got following results.
Reciving / getting by copy and paste in windows, from computer 1 to computer 2
and that is ok for me !
a file of 736024576 Bytes, Takes me at the fastest 17 Seconds
Sending from computer 1 to computer 2 takes twice the time about 39 seconds but that is how it works in general.
But reciving the same file of 736024576 Bytes (MPEG-FILE) from the Lacie Mini Home Edition take´s me 2 Minutes and 13 Seconds
via copy and paste in windows XP Pro.
Anybody now WHY it is so SLOW ????
I have CAT 6 cables and all my other computers are running fast but the lacie is terrible slow when copying files back and forth
but should be faster ????
The FTP is even slower
Anybody now how to fix the FTP speed ???
Don´t even talk about copying over the INTERNET EXPLORER WEB INTERFACE
Same file takes 5 minutes and 18 seconds from the LEMHE to a computer.
Anybody have had any solutions for making it faster ?
is it the drivers on the LACIE MINI HOME EDITION that are bad ?
or is it the network card it self or CPU, MB or something else ???
Please……..
6. As a admin on the LEMHE I need to be able to see all other accounts on the NAS but i CAN´T ?
That is a BIG seccurity risk if i make a account for a friend and he put´s something there and I can´t see what it is ?, or be able to put up a QUOTA = (LIMIT) for him, or her of how much space he or she can use on my disk !

If i´m unlucky he or she will fill it completely
whithout me knowing it or be able to handle it.
Any suggestions ????
It it nice that i can connect to it from outside my home, but leaving the ports open on my router is a big security risk !
So…. be sure to close those open ports on the router when u r done
I just use it as a LAN backup, and HOME media server.
and streaming .MPEG or .MP3 from it to a computer over LAN is working OK.
Now i just need it to work for those BIG .VOB files and connect it to the
DREAMBOX 500-T
so I can watch films from it to the TV and reccord to it without any computer running !
But I don´t know how
PLEASE HELP ………
7. Logging in via LACIE homepage seemes NOT like a secure thing !
And allso sharing files via their WEB server does NOT look like a seccure thing,
Because they will have all the Logs of info of Who U share files with, what files and IP adresses mailaccounts your mail accounts etc, soo…..
Anybody what do u think about that ?
I would be greatful for all the help I can get !
Best regards
From

2. I can view the mac address of the Lacie when using my router. I can’t tell you about your own software but I can say that it isn’t hiding itself in any way.
3. I’ve had the unit crash on me but normally through FTP and not though the network. Have you updated to 1.6.1? The reliability still isn’t 100% but it is a lot better with it.
5. I didn’t think the lacie was gigabit. But I don’t have any other NAS to compare speed to
6. I don’t think an admin should be able to view everyone elses files, so that’s just your opinion.
What you can do as an admin is to change their password so you can take over their account, but it makes it obvious that you have done so, as it should be.
7. Logging in via homelacie.com is secure. It doesn’t have an valid and trusted SSL certificate (because your IP isn’t static) but it is secure (as far as I can tell)
April 6th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Hi Graham
1 000 000 Thanks for your fast reply.
2. I have dhcp ip adress from my ISP so it happens it changes from time to time, but inside my LAN I have static ip adresses so I always know what ip adress my different computers have.
I have not tried to use DHCP within my lan, but if you say that you can see the mac of the “LEMHE” inside your router if using DHCP from the router for your LAN.
I will try that.
3. Yes !
The software on the Lacie Ethernet Mini Home Edition is updated to 1.6.1
but still it crash copying files around 1 GB.
When reinstalling the “LEMHE” I stopped the update just to try what will work, but copying a file from the computer to the NAS chrashed around a 300Mb big file
(copy and paste by mapping the NAS) like Y:\\
Then I updated it to 1.6.1 but still problems i managed a 700 Mb mpeg file but NOT a big file of 1000 Mb
Do you have any clue why ?
When you mention the FTP I have not tried to do the transfer of the 1GB .VOB files

via FTP but I will do that now.
Trying ……………………….
YES !
It worked via FTP
Thanks
But still got some strange connection dipps, losing speed and then up again ?
But now I can get all 4 GB .VOB files to the NAS.
GREAT
Problem is I want them to be in the Family Folders, but that is
impossible right now
5. YES !
On the BOX from where it was unpacked from it says:
Interface: Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 Gbits
So maybe “the bottles neck” might be the drivers, protocols or the bus speed on the mobo for the NAS, small memory and a weak CPU maybe ?
I compared to a 10 years older computer with a 450 P3 CPU and it was also very slow on the transfer/reciving, but when doing the test over the LAN with 2 computers of same strenght memory and CPU it is much faster.
So maybe I have to live with that slow speed on the
Lacie Ethernet Mini Home Edition.
Streaming a 700 Mb .mpeg movie from the “LEMHE” works OK over the LAN connected over a computer to the TV, but have not tried from outside my LAN via the Internet Explorer, but I will.
6. Hmmmm I can see it from your side but…
I have been working as a admin on differen´t companies, and there I have total controll of everything, like /mail / homedirectories/ Shares/ and every computer it self via network, for security reasons, ease of use, etc.
So it is hard for me to just let that type of thinking slide away.
Therefore I can make only 1 account for my self, sad but I have no other options for now.
Hopefully LACIE or AXENTRA will make that possible so at least the admin have access to all user catalogs and can see everything, so the machine will be more secure.
QUOTA and logging would be nice to have to.
7. What i ment was that I do not like that somebody else, in another country have access to my username, passwords, my contacts, who I am mailing and what I share to whom, logging everytning, etc.
Do you see what mean ?
My opinion is that, it´s not a secure way.
About :
4. Can´t connect the “LEMHE” to my dreambox 500-T for reccording or Viewing files ?
I can connect my DREAMBOX to the PC when i share a folder on my computer, but not on the “LEMHE”
Can you help me with that ?
Is it possible to do it ?
The Dreambox 500-T supports
NFS
CIFS
SMBFS
NEW question:
8. I wonder if “LEMHE” supports jumbo frames ?
the little brother does “LACIE ETHERNET MINI”
(Maybe I have spent money on the wrong product) ?
9. Have you heard anything about the “Can´t see the “Family” directory when logging in via FTP ?
I have the same problem and it is very irritating, don´t you think ?
I saw that you have a “ticket” sent in about it.
10. “LEMHE” does not support the Å Ä Ö or special letters
have you heard anything about that ?
Thanks for all the help so far.
My very best regards to you Graham
and all other helpfull people out there.

5. I don’t know if you know but that is a 400MHz PC with 64MB of memory.
6. I work at a university. When I worked for a department I had it your way; I could view everyones files. When we were taken over by the central IT department it changed to a completely private model. You can’t see anything, but if you needed to get at something you could take over the account.
The first way is easier. The second way is better. In my opinion.
4. I don’t have your equipment but I have successfully streamed from the Lacie to an Xbox 360. Make sure your files are in family videos, that the media sharing icon is on in the web interface and that you have waited at least 15 minutes from when you uploaded the file.
8. No idea, you’ll have to ask Axentra.
9. They say that is ‘by design’. What you can do is upload into your documents and then use the web interface to move it. Moving files is very quick and means you don’t have to be on the local network.
I have also managed to upload a 800 MB document through he Java uploader but ONLY in 1.6.1. Just in case you have trouble with FTP .
10. No, but as I’m in the UK it isn’t something I’d notice.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:54 am
Hi Graham
The problem nr 4: is SOLVED ….
I managed to fix the problem with the reccording to the NAS
The Lacie Mini Ethernet Mini Home Edition works with Dreambox 500-T
So now I can record movies from Dreambox to the NAS.
And listen to music (MP3) from the NAS via the DREAMBOX, and watch MPEG1 and MPEG2 movies also, but not DIVX
But that´s life…….Can´t have it all
Thanks for the tip on the Family Folders, that and a few other things did it.
And it worked with the setting “CIFS”.
I really hope that LACIE / AXENTRA will fix the FTP BUG so it is possible in the future to get in to the Family folders via http://FTP.
and allso make the WEB /Network interface a little faster, because it is very slow.
Thanks for all the help so far.
My very best regards to you Graham
and all other helpfull people out there.

Hi Graham
A quick one, is it possible to connect more than one external disk to a “LaCie Ethernet Disk mini Gigabit Ethernet & Hi-Speed USB 2.0″ can be found at http://www.lacie.com/se/products/product.htm?pid=10844 using an external USB-Hub and then connect more than one HD to that.
Reading the swedish spec. and it say: “USB 2.0 port för att ansluta extra hårddiskar och utöka kapaciteten” and “…Hårddiskar…” are translated to English “disks” and for me that is more than one!
Any good suggestions?

April 16th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
I would say no as the web interface would not know what to do with it.
The usb port is for backing up from the hard drive to another drive.
April 16th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Hmmmm!
Reading 5.5.2 an adm manual it say
“You can add additional storage space to your LaCie Ethernet Disk mini by connecting an external hard drive using the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port.
Connect the hard drive to the LaCie Ethernet Disk mini using the Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port (Fig.5.5.2.A.).
In the Web Administration Page, click on the Disk tab. One volume is automatically created that you can’t reformat from the Administration page (Fig 5.5.2.B.).
Refresh the page if necessary (under Windows in either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, rightclick in the frame and click on Refresh or Reload).
A share has been added in the list on the share page called usbdisk0_1 (Fig. 5.5.2.C.).”
But then it’s allmost just one.

Hi,
i have a Lacie Home edition 500 GB (v1.6.1) connected via ethernet cable to my FritzBox WiFi router.
Accessing dats from PC (Win XP Pro) works fine.
However i have 2 questions:
1. How can i select and stream music (for example a full album) from the Lacie to Windows Media Player?
2. PS3 (updated to the latest version) finds HipServ media server but the folders displayed on PS3 are empty. The message displayed on screen is ‘there are no track”. Therefore i can not see any data files (music, photos or videos) stored on Lacie. Do you have an idea on what is wrong?
Thanks in advance

HipServ Update 1.6.2 is now available to download. From your HipServ, click Administer HipServ -> Software Update -> Check now.

Hi there
Sorry to bother you with what I’m sure is a silly question. Whenever I turn on my Ethernet disk Mini, I can only navigate to homelacie. You mention something about this on your page:
“How do I stop the LaCie from redirecting me to their http://www.homelacie.com website?”
But I’m not sure how to do this. Can you help me solve this problem? It is very frustrating not being able to access the web with this switched on!

I think I’ve worked out what the problem is but I won’t know exactly how to fix it.
When the router is set up it does a port forward of port 80 (and I think 443 and 21) to the router. This means that when you are on the internet and you put in your IP address the router points the traffic towards the hard drive.
What must have happened for you is that the process is being done for internal traffic instead of internal. You need to go into your router and see if you can find a rules or port forwarding screen and see if you can correct the error.
If you didn’t do the settings yourself you should go into the Lacie and turn off UPnP and then reset the lacie and the router. Test whether that has fixed it and then manually forward 80, 443 and 21 to the hard drive.
If you did do the settings yourself then remove them and allow UPnP to do the work.
Hopefully one of those should fix it

Hi Graham
I have a Lacie Disc Mini 320gb Home edition! With latest update installed.
Iâm having serious problems streaming music and photos to my xBox 360, Iâve not extensively tested video yet so Im not sure if problem is also with video.
What happens is:
1) I select music on the xBox, change the device to the HipServ, select an album or track, hit play and all is well for about 1 and a half tracks. What happens then is the music stops and goes strait back to the device selections screen! This occurs with photo streaming, music streaming or both!
2) I have tested it on my Vista Laptop and my Desktop PC running XP using WMP 11. Sometimes even on these is stops working but in General its fine apart from when you are viewing the content through the WMP Library. What happens is same as above, about 1 and a half tracks in, the HipServ disappears from the WMP Library and then only shows content stored on the PC. After a split second the HipServ reappears. So I have to select it again to view the content!
3) Because of point 2 above I thought, lets test my PC and xBox at the same time and guess what? Both events coincide with each other. So when HipServ disappears on my PC the music stops on the xBox! Itâs as if the HipServ refreshes its self to look for Media Players and in doing so knocks the xBox out! Maybe you and any other readers could see if their HipServ does the same on their WMP and or xBox?
I have a ticket open with Lacie with a Guy called Kevin he advised me at first xBox 360 is not supported even though there website said it does and thatâs why I bought it! Anyway he went on to say the update would fix it but, yes you guessed it the problem is still here. I’ve tried all sorts even connecting them through a hub rather than through my router but nothing works. I’ve got my router set up as Lacie advises but still no luck. I can access all the drives through my mapped network drives, HipServ Agent and I have media sharing selected.
I hope you can help.
Just changing the subject a little: I think I read earlier that you recommend uninstalling the HipServ Agent software is this correct? I know it will not fix my problem but will the Mirror backup still work if I do? Or do you recommend a different backup system?
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Ryan
