Trip to Hull

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

On Week 2 of the University year, the 2nd busiest week of the year, Amy and I went to Hull. Work weren’t really happy about it, but it was Amy’s mother’s only week off for many a month.

On the first day we went off to Hull Fair and Amy won a little bagpuss doll by spending a lot of money and enjoying herself. I went around moaning about how it’s all fixed and it’s a waste of money, but I had a go on one and won a pretty big teddy. I was happy after that. £1, one prize.

The Saturday we turned up was the last day of the fair so it was all pretty hectic. We didn’t stay too late but still managed to stay for a few hours.

By Monday we’d gone to town and I’d bought an xbox 360 * with a bunch of 2nd hand games, including the fantastic Guitar Hero 2, which I ended up spending many an hour on.

Tuesday we went down to Leeds and visited Ikea for Lunch. Amy bought a new stool that is being used as a mini-craft table. Good stuff.

Both journeys were pretty flawless. There was a bit of worry as the only motorway out of Hull was closed until 10 minuets before we left, but just like our Cardiff trip, because it had just opened, everyone avoided the road and it was very clear. Except for the fog. There was only about 300 yards of dense fog, but it’s really scary being in there. You slow down because you can’t see very far, but you slow down too much and someone will go straight into the back of you as they can’t see you’re doing 40 on a motorway.

First moan

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

I wanted to have a moan about this website – http://daringfireball.net/2007/10/milhouse – and more specifically this quote

Consider this: Do you know of anyone — anyone at all — talking today about switching from the Mac to Windows? I don’t. Not even Dvorak/Enderle-style muckraking Apple-tweaking pundits are claiming that anyone is switching from the Mac to Windows, because it’s just so preposterous.

The answer is yes, loads of them. The only thing is that Apple have now been clever enough to allow their hardware to run Windows. So what you actually have is a massive percentage of Mac users who have swapped over to windows as well as the mac. Do you really think that every ’switcher’ to the mac doesn’t also have a windows pc somewhere in their house or work to do all the things that Macs can’t do? It just happens to be that with every Mac bought you put a 1 in the ’switched’ column and for every Mac user using boot camp you have a 1 in the ‘Give Microsoft £100 but pretend that they are still a mac user because they bought the hardware’.

Lots of people buy Macs around here. Without trying to offend too many people, the mac users in our place try and convert people more than Jehovah Witnesses. And then they come and ask me how they can get all their software working. Even the stuff that is out on the Mac, you should see their face when they’re told they have to re-buy it.

Ready for a right moan

I’ve got a few weblinks to moan at and I really must get round to complaining about them. And we’re done so much stuff (one includes a pink teddy bear) and I will get round to posting.

After the pub.

And maybe after I’m sober again.

The next 25 years of gaming

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

I found this cracked.com article on digg at lunchtime and think it’s a very interesting read if you get a few moments. Of course it’s all just speculation but some of the points are actually quite good and funny. Especially how the biggest advancements in internet technologies at the moment are just helping my inbox get full of

C.W.T.’E h+a-s t,h-e potenti._al to r’eturn 5′0_0*% to y_o.u*r mone_y withi_n 7 tr,ading d_a_y*s’

I have 603 of those in my inbox this morning. If anyone else wants to send me some then send it straight to mygooglespambox.spam@mediaguy . I don’t see any other reason why gmail would give me 2GB of mailbox space.

And while I’m talking about gaming… if you have a PC, if you like games then there is no reason in the world not to buy Valve’s Orange box. 5 games for £40, 1 of which I have played for 25 hours in the past 2 weeks. It’s just that good.
